What type of older MacBook would be worth buying in 2018? My needs: office, browsing, music, and PDF reading. Is 4GB RAM enough for light use, for the next 5 years or so?

I doubt the under-powered Air will last that long, but if you treat it properly I’d give it around 7 years. However, as with all laptops, you have many options. For a more powerful try the Blade Stealth from Razer, or a thinner option is the HP Spectre. However, if Apple is what you need, then a Macbook (MacBook) is a pretty decent thin-and-light $1,200 laptop.
