What type of older MacBook would be worth buying in 2018? My needs: office, browsing, music, and PDF reading. Is 4GB RAM enough for light use, for the next 5 years or so?

For many Mac users an Air with 4 GB of RAM may suffice, but it won’t retain that snappy performance for long. As we’ve come to expect from the technology world the shiniest, newest OS won’t stay that way for long. The same goes for all Macs. If/when Apple decides to release the new version of Mac OS, you’ll be wishing you didn’t cheap out. The storage is similar. The 128 model will be fine FOR NOW, but 4 years down the line it’ll be a mess. In my opinion, spending the extra money is worth it if it means I don’t have to buy another $1,000+ device. Because it’s gonna happen, especially if you cheap out. For another $200 you could potentially get through another 2–3 years with the same Macbook. That means, if you’re cautious, you COULD get 7–8 years out of that same Macbook. My cousin has the Pro from 2010 and her’s could actually get her through her first 2 years of college, which means she’ll have it for around 9 years. I doubt the under-powered Air will last that long, but if you treat it properly I’d give it around 7 years. However, as with all laptops, you have many options. For a more powerful try the Blade Stealth from Razer, or a thinner option is the HP Spectre. However, if Apple is what you need, then a Macbook (MacBook) is a pretty decent thin-and-light $1,200 laptop.
